I recently finished a new timber frame style pavilion in my friends backyard. It was built from rough sawn, full dimension Douglas Fir from a local mill. He wanted an open outdoor structure built on his deck to shield them from the sun. He liked the idea of three gables with the east most gable extended a few extra feet.
Standard woodworking power tools were used with some handwork done with chisel and wooden mallet. Nothing special.
Posts and lower beams are 6”x6”. Ridge beams are 4”x8”. Corner braces are made from 3” thick stock. Rafters are 2”x6” and strapping is 1”x6”. The concrete piers are 9”x9” with filleted corners.
The pavilion is topped with black painted plywood over the strapping boards; with black metal roof panels over that. There’s black metal trim that wraps the gabled edges and ridge cap on the peaks.
I designed the pavilion in Sketchup and I used a plugin to create some animation of how it all went together. That was a tedious, long process but, I liked how it turned out.
I posted a build video on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/wuRMRWp4Ce0
I’d like to hear what you think.
Thanks,
Kent

I’ll tell you what I think. I think that pavilion is impressive and I also think that is one of the best video animations I’ve seen. EXTREMELY professional. WOW.

The natural wood in the sunlight looks amazing mate. I would love to have such a well built shelter area for storage on my lawn if I had the space!
