Hi Derek, first step was to apply a really dark gel stain. I didn’t do it but you could even use a black dye. I brushed it on and tried not to make the areas I was going to paint as dark as the background. To add the color I used acrylic paint and changed the color of green with some mixing and blending. It’s not as hard as it sounds. Experimenting first on a practice piece is a good idea :-)
