I saw the mallet video by ThirdCoastCraftsman on YouTube and was inspired by his design.
I am unsure what type of wood this is, but I found it in the form of a pallet here in Japan. It’s one of the hardest and heaviest woods I’ve ever worked, as finished it is 3” square T mallet end with 8” handle and weighs over 2lbs! Also with all of that curl it was nearly impossible to shape.
I cut up a brass firehose fitting to make the 3/8” collar and textured it with a ball-peen hammer.
Finished with three coats Boiled Linseed and Antique Wax.
Hope you like it and if you have any idea what the wood is, I’d love to hear it!

I just searched African Magogany, that’s a great guess! I didn’t know mahogany could be so dark, but the grain could pass for “Khaya” up close.

I’d say it looks more like purple heart which is very hard and can have curl to it. Very nice mallet.

What a beautiful mallet! I envy you very much for this kind of palletwood!

If I caught someone using it, violence would be imminent…
