Chess table to go

Back in August, a neighbor of mine asked me if I’d ever made a chess table. Of course my answer was “No, but I would give it a shot.” Then he said they were moving in January, (He’s military) and could I do it before the movers arrived. Hmmmmm..I can only work the weekends on it due to my real job….I have a wife who likes to do things together when I have time off..OUTSIDE the shop/garage….sure, challenge accepted. So several weeks and lots of vacation days expended with sideways glances from my wife, here it is.

As per usual, no plans, just scratching on a piece of plywood and knowing the height had to be 28-29 inches and it had to be large enough that other games could be played on it, and it had to store the chess pieces.

So here is my first truly commissioned work. Solid walnut and curly maple with Bocote wedges. Breaks down into a size small enough to box and ship. BLO/Mineral Spirits/Poly blend finish.

Will attempt to make one more chess table for myself one day. Have more ideas for another style top.

WOW. I’m sure the commissioner was thoroughly impressed. The stretcher/tenon/wedges are gorgeous, as is the tabletop.

Great design. I love the trestle and the detail all around the top.

Certainly the nicest chess table I have ever seen Scot and remarkable craftsmanship as well. I would have a hard time parting with something like this. Looking forward to seeing your next one!
