Imagine you saw this twisted shape in a photo and said to yourself, “How would I make that out of wood?” Perhaps start with a long, soft wood dowel and steam it into shape? No, this is an endless loop, so you’d have to devise a fancy joint to connect the ends.
Or, you could just whittle it from a scrap piece! That’s it! Have fun.

Way past my patience!

I have to admit it is neat though.

No piece of wood is ever useless – if nothing else it can burned for warmth or tossed into the compost pile to feed the worms. :-)

That being said, this is a very useful piece of wood because it engages the hands and mind to figure out how it was carved. Thanks for posting.

That’s truly an intricate carving, Phil – well done!

I like it! You won’t see me doing one of those. I wouldn’t live long enough to finish it. Bjarne Jespersen’s book, “Woodcarving Magic” has some beautiful work, but way beyond my patience level, as well.

Yes, you had a lot of patience for that one. I’m amazed you were able to keep it in one piece.

Hours of fun at little cost. Can’t argue with that.

This was actually carved on a weekend family camping trip. Basswood, no finish
