My friends asked me if I could make a doll’s cradle for their granddaughter as they could find nothing suitable in the shops or online. I had a search and found free plans for a cradle at, and they approved the design.

Thinking about making the ends from the plans I thought that I would need two printouts for the cot ends as one would not be easily removed to make a second. But! I thought, I could trace around the finished first end for the second – or I could use the first one with a flush trim router. Eventually, my old brain realised that the best way was to make a template in easier-to-shape thinner material, and use that with the flush trimmer – as I have done several times before. It takes a while, but I get there in the end!

Having made one, and stuck on some carved wooden shapes I found on some old furniture pieces for added decoration, I was happy to leave the painting to my friends – who were delighted with my offering. Seeing the template sitting there when clearing up, it occurred to me that I could make another, to sell with some other items I have made at the Christmas Fair that my wife organises in our village each year.

When I had it finished, I added some wood carved flower applique shapes that I found on Ebay, and painted the cot in a sort of champagne colour – used on the re-fresh of our kitchen cabinets. My wife, Avril, was so taken with the prettiness of the cot that she decided to use her patchwork skills to make a quilt and other items for it. They really make the item stand out, and I’m sure I will have no problem selling it – although, of course, for such an event there is no way I could charge what I should do if it were in a commercial market instead of a small event for charity.
