I’ve had a few commissions for pens lately so I have been making these small boxes for the pens. I think it’s a nice touch. It is made out of 8/4 piece of walnut and the technique takes a few hints from bandsaw boxes.

I left the bandsaw texture in the lid – I think it gives a nice contrast

Let me know what you think

Beautiful – I believe a nice pen deserves a nice box (see my projects). I really like the texture on the top.

If I can be so bold as to offer a critique, the box looks heavy, I’d try to lighten it by making the sides thinner. On my double pen boxes I’m using 3/16” – 1/4” thick sides. It is plenty strong enough to hold a pen. Just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback, JADobson. I’d have to figure out a new way to cut the slot for the lid, or find a bit that cuts a shallower slot. Right now, the wall thickness at the slot level is 1/8”. I’ll look into options and maybe give a thinner one a go.

Nice work on your projects. Thanks again

Cool design – I like the scratches that you left on the surfaces.

Nice idea! May have to borrow idea as I just started to turn pens myself.

Thanks Cmmyakman and Andre! Hey Andre – if you want to know more about my process for making them, just let me know. I’m sure you can figure out a way, but I think i’ve found a pretty efficient and quick way of making them.

I was searching LJ for an inspiration for a box for a single candle. This is close to what I had in mind. I wish you had posted more photos!

Nice, simple box.
