I’ve been looking for projects to clear out the scrap bins lately, and here’s one of them.

Made a panel with all sorts of scraps, but it wasn’t thick enough for the back of this piece. Made another panel with pine and used the cutoffs from the ends of the scrap wood panel to create a backer panel but to still allow me to bevel the top and bottom without revealing that its not one solid piece of wood. The ends are dominoed in for a bit more strength. Dadoed the shelf, then cut in a taper on both sides with the track saw. Then glued on maple accent strips on both sides and beveled the maple for a lighter look. Shelves are eucalyptus and have the same bevel. Top shelf is held in with 6 neodymium magnets that are lined up with the 6 screws holding it to the wall.

Finish is tung oil, shellac, then spar varnish (hopefully helps protect the colors)

I like those various wood stripes. Nice groove joint solution -I hope it will be sufficient.

The bottom 3 shelves are actually screwed in from the back with 5×3 inch screws which should be more than sufficient. Didn’t glue them because cross grain I was a little worried about wood movement working them loose.

Top shelf the magnets hold well enough that you have to pull pretty hard to get it loose so I don’t think it will be an issue.

Great solution to highlight the woods in your scrap bin. I like it so much I’m going to keep this in the back of my head as a project to do this winter to empty out my own scrap bin!
