I was asked by a client to make a custom cutting board in the shape of a dove with a text inlay. The maple board is approximately 13” x 17”. The inlay is black walnut.
To create the inlay I first cut a pocket for the text using a 90 degree V bit in the maple board. The actual walnut text inlay is a mirror image of the text. The inlay is creating using the same V bit, but this time removing all the material except for the text (See 3rd photo). The fourth image shows the pocket text cut and the male inlay. The two pieces are aligned and glued together. The excess walnut material is removed using a drum sander leaving a very crisp walnut inlay. This method allows for fine detail. All work is done on a CNC machine using Aspire software.
