Bookshelf base

My daughter, having seen bookshelves made from crates on Pinterest or such a site wanted to make one. Having found new crates for a reasonable price in IKEA, she found a pattern to assemble them.
But when posed on the ground, it was not very elegant and it would not allow using the vacuum cleaner.

So I designed a base for it.
The feet are “half lapped” (in fact 1/3 lapped) into the long rails.
The cross members are in dado with a wedged tenon (à la Paul Sellers).

The crates are kept together with screw and the assembly is screwed to the cross members.

I’m sure you daughter is happy with the “bookshelves” and it looks great. What a good way to get you daughter started in wood working.

I do have a concern with the legs. If the shelves are filled entirely with books I’m not sure those legs would support the weight. Perhaps if they were doubled it would be better and safer. But if there will also be other decorative type items on some of the shelves it is probably fine.

Clever. I like the looks of this. Nice work on the half-laps.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

The bookshelf also contains some decorative items.
I think with the half-lap joints, the weight is in some way transmitted to end grain in the feet and they work mostly in compression.
The half-lap joint should also resist to any torsion effort due to the inclination of the feet.
