Maui’s Hook

This was a Velentine’s Day project for my daughters in 2017; replicating the hook used by the character Maui in the movie Moana.

I was inspired by the Wood Whisperer and the plans he posed. Rather than using an ordinary (pine or fir) 2×4 as he did, I used cedar because I wanted a particularly lightweight wood.

The photographs essentially tell the story. After gluing up the boards, I rough cut the shape of the hook on the bandsaw. Then I used a cheap Harbor Freight grinder to power carve the edges to round everything over. After a bit of sanding, I used a $10 woodburning tool from Amazon to add the designs. I used my daughters’ initials and other random things as inspiration. Then I gave it a few coats of spray poly to seal it. The final touch was using some hot glue to fasten some sisal rope around the handle.

I do like it well.

Only those who have used woodburners can appreciate the time taken for that excellent job. Cedar is a bit difficult to get even burns into, Yours looks great.

Very arty and nicely done. I’m sure your daughters will treasure them.
