The plans and design are Dave Gentry. The frame is Doug Fir and Okoume marine plywood and the skin is 10oz dacron which is very strong stuff. The rowing system is made from plans by Colin Angus and the oars are hollow birdsmouth oars made from spruce with oak wear strips. They are 9’6” with concept 2 hardware—quite light. The whole thing cost me $600 which I think is pretty good for a sliding seat system.

The boat is fast! The learning curve is much higher than canoeing or kayaking. It took me 3 hours on 3 outings to start to get my stroke consistent. Now I have about 50 mile logged. This is my first rowboat and I can crush canoes with 2 people or kayaks, though I think I would have more endurance in a kayak; that’s what I’m used to.

Skin on frame is an quick and light boat design. The boat is 18ft and 50lbs. I can lift it off the car by myself. If you have ever wanted to build a boat, I think skin on frame is a good start. Check out Dave’s designs and if you want a kayak, Cape Falcon is also a good design.

You should Robert! It took me 10-12 days. Skin-on-frame is a great way to start. Skin will last 20 years if you keep it out of the sun in storage.
