This was the first CNC router I built, two previous attempts were abandoned. The plans were purchased online and are now available free.

I deviated from the plans to use material that I had already on hand. Construction grade lumber and plywood,
vee-bearings and 1×1 angle iron for the linear guides. The X and Y axis are direct chain drive, the Z axis is lead screw driven. The servo drive system is from DMM Technology in Vancouver.

After 6 years of use the Mach3 control software this machine logged 3.2 km in the X direction, 5.8 km in the Y direction. Although it wasn’t pretty it sure did a lot of work.

I designed and built a second one using all the electronics and mechanical components from the first, the second one is shown here cutting kayak frames.

Love it… it’s pretty cool how much work you can do with a home brew CNC built from plywood.
