Hand made wooden knife I made from a scrap piece of curly maple. Just thought it would look kind of neat, I mean, who else has a wooden knife like this? :)

Hand carved!! – that’s pretty awesome. Beautiful choice of wood as well.

Wooden implements are great for things like cutting pies or cornbread! They also won’t scratch non-stick pots and pans like metal utensils. Looks great!

Very nice! I think your carving skills are very good. It looks exactly like a knife and the proportions are spot on. I’ve never done any carving—I would think figured Maple is tough to carve—is that true?

Maybe I should rephrase that first line. I cut the shape out on a bandsaw and worked it down from there with some carving tools, scrapers and lots and lots and lots of sanding. The maple seemed to work pretty well from my experience.

I can imagine there are lots of young kids that would love to cut their wedding cake with such a knife.
What would you have to charge for it to break even?
If you were to make another what would you do differently?

Very nice work, Mike. Your shaping looks great. A serrated option next? My worst woodshop cut was from a maple pizza peel getting sharpened with a spoke shave. I thought I’d work two bevels in. The first was very keen I found out painfully.

Thanks everyone, this is actually the second one I have made. I made one a while back out of a piece of burl maple, the wood on that was incredible. I think this one turned out a little better this time, I took the thickness of the blade down more on this one and it seems to work a little better. A serrated option sounds like a good plan for the next one, may work well as a bread knife.
