Sliding-lid Box

My six-year-old daughter and I made a little sliding-lid box for my wife’s recent birthday. It was originally going to be poplar or pine, depending on what the big box store had in small, thin pieces; but we found a couple of pieces of red oak that made me decide to sacrifice some workability for appearance. (The small ray flecks are more prominent in person than in the pictures.) My daughter still got a little time with the plow plane, and helped drive the dowels that reinforce the rabbets.

My daughter decided on the sliding lid, and helped with wood selection and finish choice. The birthday message, which includes an inside joke, was also her idea. After we transferred the crayon to the inside of the lid, I sealed it in with a coat of shellac.

The box is finished with boiled linseed oil, garnet shellac and beeswax. The shellac has a little Transtint in it, but not much. My collaborator didn’t want a darker finishes.

Very nice. I’m sure it will be treasured as an heirloom for a very long time.

Nice box, and that it was a collaboration between you and your Daughter really nice. I’m betting your Wife liked this.

Thanks for posting.

I like working with my kids, young adults now. Good call on the oak. Well done.
