So I needed another bench for my wife the pastor and an event at our home. I saw old plans for a lattice bench and modified them using 2×3x8 ft. The seat is 30 in by 10.5 wide. I cut the 8 ft. in half. Then cut at 30 in, and 12 in and 6 in. To make the spacers, I ripped the 6 inch in half at 3/4 wide. So I used my mitersaw and table saw and drill and impact driver. and wood glue. 1 inch screws for the 3/4 spacers and 2.5 in screws for the 2x and the feet. I planned the spacers to sit below the top about 1/2 inch and the bottom spacer to be level. As I did each layer I checked the alignment of the top and the ends. While a 2×3 is low cost here, about 2.25, when all assembled this is a heavy bench. I sanded all rough spots and selected the best pieces for the outside faces. The end caps were 3/4 strips to conceal any ends and the feet will stabilize and add longevity. In cost I used 5 or 6 2×3x8 ft. so about $14 and any screws and glue on hand. I intend to bring it in this winter to choose the finish paint or stain. Yes I can say a one day project in the shop.

Functional! I think a Med. brown stain and some spar varnish.

Not going to be too comfortable unless you plane down that middle one.
It’s sticking up.

Seal with Zinsser Sealcoat 1:3
Then a gel stain..
Paint shows every imperfection. Stain hides many imperfections.

edit: and if you are using this indoors, no to spar never hardens and should only be used outside. I would not want to stick to it while sitting. Spar remains soft so it can expand and contract with the wood. Use it for outdoor or a location that is not HVAC controlled.
