This is the first of two fly rod cases that I just completed for inclusion in an event/auction to raise funds for a group called the Shepherd’s Men. This group helps raise awareness/funds for a place in Atlanta, GA (the Shepherd Center) that provides care to veterans and their families – most of whom are Purple Heart Medal recipients. They’re a pretty awesome group. Check out their website at if you want more info about them.

Anyways – this fly rod case will actually be a surprise gift to a veteran who was treated at the Shepherd Center and who will be making a fly rod to be auctioned off with another one of my cases. Right now, he thinks that this is the case that will be in the auction. It isn’t. It’s actually going home with him as a gift. I can’t wait to see his reaction.

The case, itself, is made of purpleheart, maple, and walnut. I engraved one of the ends with the logo of the Shepherd’s Men organization and hand stitched the leather work, myself. The hinges were a bear to put in because purpleheart is so hard AND splinters a lot – but they were worth it, I thinnk. After I cut the faux fur for the inside, I had the edges of the upholstery finished by a local seamstress in brown to match the leather and walnut ends prior to installation (I did this as well). This case is made for the type of rods he usually makes (and fishes with) – which break down into 3 pieces – so it will hopefully get used a lot.

I’m happy with the results and I hope he will be as well. I’ve included photos below as the ones at the top are limited to 6.

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

That’s beautiful, both of them are – and a beautiful story to go with it. The hinges look like a bonus, very ornate.
