I delivered a pretty special project this week. Later this month, a mentor and friend of mine is retiring. Since I won’t see him again before then, I gave him his retirement gift a bit early.

As an avid fisherman, one of my fly rod cases was a natural choice for me to make for him. A couple years ago, he took a rod building class and had the end of his rod engraved with a Sherlock Holmes silhouette so I made his case to match.

The case is 50” long (inside) and made of hand selected cherry and walnut woods. I cut the cherry wood sides of this case from one large piece of lumber so that the wood grain would flow and be complimentary all the way around. The walnut ends were chosen from the best possible and most attractive I could find. The bison leather handles were hand stitched and held in place with antique brass hardware. The antique brass hinges were a new upgrade for me and the upholstery and plaque ended up as nice touches, I think.

The case was well received and my mentor and friend was both surprised and happy.

Take a look…

Great looking fly rod case to hold a handmade fly rod.

Thanks everyone. My friend loves it.

The hinges were a nice find for me but a real challenge to fit. I had made a few of these previously and a reoccurring comment was that the hinges should be nicer…so I found these. They’re made for use on doors so the knobs that come out from the center end up making contact with the case, itself, when opened. I had to chisel out material until everything played nicely together. It was worse than doing the same with my 4 and 2 year olds at times but it came out good, I think.

I’m making 2 more at the moment for an auction to support veterans. I’ll put pics up soon…

How thick are the walls of the box? And how much does it weigh in total?
