Off and on for years I would tackle hand cut dovetails. I adhered to the practise makes perfect cliche. Copious amounts poor practise produced just barely OK dovetails. I even took a class offered by my woodworkers club. There with a little instruction and a nudge to practise what i had learned I got to be just a little better than a hack.
I wanted a special tool box to hold the mostly specialized tools needed to cut dovetails.
There has been this narrow piece of curly maple bouncing around for some time and I kinda built the box around that curly maple handle. Tools such as dividers, marking gauge, dovetail saw, fret saw, marking knife etc all got their own dedicated place within and outside the tool box. A combo square on one end and chisels on the other. The ends are mahogany that I had to glue up after resawing. To strengthen and add some flair I inlaid a bowtie to tie the edge joint together and repeated the bowtie on the handle just for pizzaz. All the angles on the ends are the same degree as the dovetails. The tool holders inside are also angled the same as the tails.
My dovetails came out pretty nice and I’m pretty pleased with my efforts.
Thanks for looking.

Well Jack, that is just about one of the best looking toolboxes I’ve seen. Absolutely beautiful perfect dovetails. Your choices of contrasting woods is really easy on the eyes. Great craftsmanship and thoughtful design. I’m a fan! Good to see you posting again.

You were just saving up your very best DTs for this box. If those are hack level DTs I need practice just to be lousy.

Nice post, even nicer toolbox. Thanks for posting.

Sweet! That there is a darn nice looking Box, D.T.s aren’t to shabby either :)
I usually scrap my first set, so always make my boards at least 3 boo boos long!

Nice tool box. The proportions of handles and sides are very pleasing to the eye.

I’ve always been fond of the saying, “Perfect practice makes perfect.” Practicing with poor technique will always leave one disadvantaged.
