Just finished (maybe 20 minutes ago) this hybrid wood/resin wand a friend commissioned from me for cosplay/larp. He is a big fan of resin work, and challenged me to build a “lightning wand” that would also light up. Unfortunatlly form me, my lathe is still not operational so this was all done the a chisel, dremel, bandsaw, and a roatary sander. The hardest part was deciding how I wanted to do the lighting. I was able to find some mini LED lights online. Once I had the rough form I cut out the notch for the battery pack so I could run the wiring through the inside of the wand to avoid any lose wires. After that I broke it in half, drilled out the center just large enough to feed the wiring through, then got it ready to cast. I wrapped the two pieces with some old transparency film I had being carefull to keep the shape, then I used electrical tape to seal it off. I then cut a hole barely big enough to pour the resin through and said a little prayer. After it set, I carefully removed the tape and transparency film. To be completely honest. I was shocked at how well it turned out. I’m still toying with the idea of adding a solder inlay lightning bolt, but for now, this is it. I don’t think he’ll be expecting this one.

Merlin’s Beard! Who needs an Elder Wand when you’ve got this? Harry and Draco will be fighting over that for sure!

Great job, definitely going into the favorites – been looking for ways to add lights to a wizard staff – the resin idea just might do the trick.

Where is the switch for turning the light on? And how do you change batteries?

Thanks for posting.

The switch is in the handle. If you see the pictures on the original posting, you’ll notice where i notched out the base. You can’t see it, but I took a drill bit and make a hole through the center to run the wires. The switch is a basic on/off switch for CR2032 batteries (see picture below) you can find these on amazon, ebay, ect.. they’re pretty common. Please note, this is all after I broke the wand in half. I ran a 3.2mm miniature LED through the hole and connected it to the switch (I bought mine at https://true2scale.com). To conceal the battery/switch, I just wraped it with some faux leather cord I had laying around. In order to change the batteries, you simply take the wrapping off and the switch will just slide right out, given you left enough loose wire.
