Really interesting color in this Sapele slab, thought I should share!
The grain is fabulous but I though the natural color change from the sap to heartwood was a feature that deserved to be shown off. So, I inlaid amber and gold with the grain to frame each color…pretty wood!
The base was squared from a Eucalyptus log that had a ton of character.

Another masterpiece. Do you have a blog or video about your inlay technique for the gold and amber? I have been thinking about that (on a much smaller scale) for a cane handle but have no clue how to start. Thank you for posting.

Joni, Your work is seriously amazing. Where on earth do you find such beautiful wood in such massive amounts? Not only the slabs but the bases, too. And where on earth do you find the gold and amber inlay material? All your tables you’ve posted are beyond beautiful. Ditto Leafherder – I’d love to see your process too, although I’m sure I could never accomplish anything even close! :) Again, just gorgeous work.

Thank you Kim,
I’m always on the hunt for interesting pieces…The bases are fun, we collect a lot of driftwood and interesting wood off the beach in Alaska. I’m in Ak right now actually, getting ready to head south with another load of wood. I’d be happy to sell raw bases if anyone is interested.
Although we don’t mill as many logs as we used to for slabs we still do some of our own milling. There are some great mill finds out there as well.
I find some of my inlay materials at the gem and mineral shows, but I started carving in stone upwards of 40 years ago so the stone inlay comes pretty naturally to me. The gold and silver can be found online…as can a lot of interesting materials.
Best of Success, Joni
