We have been in the process of building a new house since last October and I had the intention of building an island, probably next year, after getting a shop built. However, soon after moving in the wife began to think that we might need an island sooner rather than later, so with no shop and limited tools and experience this is the result.

It was definitely a learning experience, but I am relatively pleased with the result for my first bigger project. I did cheat by using box store cabinets, but the top is solid oak that I bought as roughly 5/4 one foot wide by fifteen foot long sections of laminated trailer decking seconds, $20 each, which I thought was a steal. All in I had around $500 invested in materials…I cant argue with that. All that is left is for her to pick out the drawer pulls.

It looks great to me!
And if the mama is happy then it is a total success!

Well done Jay, a real nice design and beautiful workmanship!
That’s quite a change from building a house!
