Live Edge Walnut Console Table

This is one of my favorite pieces. The top piece was a leftover from another project and I kept it for several years waiting for it to tell me what it wanted to be. It finally told me – a console (or hallway or sofa) table. Its solid black walnut except for the white oak inlays on the legs. Instead of sandwiching a piece of oak between two walnut pieces to make the legs, I routed a 1/4” slot then glued in thin strips of oak.

You might notice the legs are set into the bottom shelf. I didn’t want to cutout the shelf with a jigsaw so I ripped the shelf piece into three pieces (the center piece fitting inside the legs) and then crosscut to length. Its hard to see where I cut it largely due to all the grain and sapwood figuring. Pretty happy with that technique.

As always, I love the look of the sap wood and there’s a lot of it in this piece. Multiple coats of Watco danish so far – waiting until I have enough dust free days in the shop to wipe on some poly.

The only thing I don’t like – and why I held onto the top for so long – is that its so narrow. About 7”. Makes it much less functional as a console table. Oh well.

In any event, thanks for looking.

I also love the contrast of sap wood to heart wood on Walnut. I do tend to really like sofa tables as I simply feel they are such a great idea. Nice work My Friend.
