Loft Bed

We decided to convert our small playroom (half the garage) into a bedroom, and decided to build a loft to take full advantage of the 10×13 living space. I built it entirely from lumber reclaimed from the massive bookshelves I’d built back in the 90’s when I converted half the garage – the wood was in great shape! The hardest part was figuring out the staircase. I still don’t know how I calculated those stringers, but I definitely left a good portion of my sanity with the task.

The loft itself is free standing on 3 sides, then lag-bolted to the stairs. the stairs are secured to the concrete block exterior wall, so it is very solid. I come from Earthquake country, and I’d definitely take shelter under it. Not a lot of clearance between mattress and ceiling, so it’s not for claustrophobic or sleepwalking folk.

The shelves under the loft was made of an old picket fence bed I’d made when my kids were younger. A full chest of drawers and a small desk fit nicely under the loft.

We made one for the grand kid. We made a ladder. Sort of wish we went with the stairs like you did – but I did not think of it.

Have your say...
