College Bed

This was the first woodworking project I’d done where I intentionally introduced a bit of artistry into an otherwise big bulky piece of furniture. My daughter was off to college, heading into an unfurnished room and wanted to take her full-sized mattress with her (but NOT the loft I’d built for her the year before…thank Heaven). I needed something that could fit into (not on top of) a small SUV, modular enough to be disassembled in an hour, and provided some surface area for books, etc…I went with Pine, as we wanted the budget to be well under $100, and lag bolts to hold the major components together.

The headboard is my favorite bit, as it incorporates pieces of wood from all sorts of things from her childhood: pieces of her picket fence bed I made her when she was younger, parts of her old bookshelf, the mattress support planks from an even older bed I’d made her as a toddler, and that sort of thing. Each had different finishes, so the stain pattern came out very cool. Turned out well.

Love how the headboard came out. What a nice look.
