Here’s my entry in the mallet swap. I started out with two mallets and was hoping one would turn out decent enough to be worthy of the talent here on LJ.
The heads are two piece and I cut the handle slot before glue up. I shaped everything on the lathe and fussed with size/balance until it felt right.
The mallet I ended up sending to Mike (mikeacg) was the smaller of the two. The handle was just a little too thin so I added a two piece leather wrap that really made the mallet feel good and balanced. In the photos you can see a few tests attempts with the leather…all looked good but I went with the two piece for style points.
The brass I purchased online and cut and sanded to fit…then I drilled holes to tack it in with small brass nails.
In total I made 4 mallets and this one is the one I kept picking up and wanting to swing. A fun project and I really enjoyed participating in my first swap.
Thanks for looking.

Tom – Very nice mallet and your your first swap. (This is only my 2nd swap).

The leather on the handle looks great and it will help with not losing your grip. I also like the brass bands around the ends of the head. It’s a solid, good looking mallet that I wouldn’t be afraid to use, often.

Hopefully, you can find time to participate in future swaps as well.

Great job, Tom! That’s an awfully good entry for your first swap. Going to be tough to top yourself in the future. ;-)

Super mallet Tom! Great design. And the execution and finish are top notch. Without the scale of your hand in that pic, it looks as if it could be big enough to pound railroad spikes, but really it’s size makes a nice user for bench work. Very cool. I love the leather wrap and the banding.

I have to tell you guys, that he isn’t kidding about the swingability of this hammer. It feels so good in your hand and the balance is perfect. Nice to see it come together to help you appreciate the work Tom put into it though I still don’t understand how the head/handle are joined together… I want to learn how to do leather wraps like that!!!
Thanks again for a beautiful mallet, Tom, and for all the goodies as well!

This is a beautiful design and exceptional execution Tom! The addition of the leather wrap and the brass hoops not only gets big style points but I’d be willing to bet also improves usability. Looking forward to having you in future swaps!
