Hey Jocks – So I built the sawhorses, the shelving unit and the workbench, and the better workbench and when I was getting ready to build some more shop furniture my wife reminded me that I had promised to build our one year old a toy box.
So now Mac (Mikayla) is two and the toy box is finally finished!
I’ve gotta say – I couldn’t be happier with the way it came out. First of all it was a great learning experience – I got the opportunity to break in a few new tools and learn how not to do a whole lot. I’d never stained anything before and I was pretty impressed with the Pecan stain I slapped on after it was all done.
The box is primarily Russian birch with Pine trim. The shelf is the same – (thanks for that idea Poroskywood) – and the inner hinges were picked up from Lee Valley. They’re spring loaded and are pretty useful for keeping tiny fingers safe. The case fits together with a number of rabbets while the base sits in dadoes.
I can honestly say I wouldn’t have started or finished this project without seeing the cool stuff you guys post every day, so thanks for the inspiration and hopefully I’ll be able to complete my next project before the little one is asking for the car keys!

Nice work Mike! I like the idea of the move-able shelf in the top, and I agree, the stain does look great!

Looks great!
Anti slam hinges are a must have and yours look like they will keep Mac safe.
Nice build.
