5 string License Plate banjo

Five-string open-back banjo with bent red oak sides, white oak top, maple neck and bridge, cherry fretboard and headstock, and walnut tailpiece. The license plate belongs to a retired faculty colleague. It’s not loud, but it plays. EDIT: 2nd picture shows kerfed lining & bent sides.

Looks good! Can you post more pictures please? Haven’t built one yet but did buy David Sutton’s book, An Obsession with Cigar Box Guitars so it’s just a matter of time!

Thanks for the feedback. Mike, I added a progress photo. Lots of wisdom and other stuff over at I’ve done a dozen or more, some decorative/commemorative and some to beat sounds out of. If you get into it, I have a fret-cutting crosscut sled setup that works pretty well.

Thanks Jim! I’ve been learning a lot from a guy who goes by the named CarveOne on the Vectric forum. He’s been pushing me to jump in with both feet… Who knows? It could happen!
