After a year of lurking and learning on this site, it was time for a bed for my youngest.

I needed something quick that didn’t require tons of skills I haven’t yet developed, or she’d be too big before I got it done. I stumbled across a toddler bed plan on http://ana-white.com that I liked the look of, and which I used for basic dimensions and design. Those plans were too simplistic even for me, so I modified them in a couple ways – I can take it apart, I chamferd the panels in the head-board and foot-board to give them some definition, and set said panels into dados instead of just running them behind the top/bottom.

Everything is pine, except the rails. Everything looked so little when it was in pieces, I was a bit concerned at the strength of little pine rails and thought poplar might be stronger. Pine would hold kids for sure, but I knew I’d be sitting there reading stories, so I opted up. Unnecessary?

I wasn’t happy at all with the various HD latex paints I’d used on the radiator covers I made, but LJ forums steered me to SW. So, primed then painted with Sherman-Williams oil-based Pro Classic, ‘Downy’ (although it looks pretty white unless you hold a piece of paper next to it). So far, I’m much happier with the paint, so thanks!

I was pleasantly surprised how sturdy it came out – strong enough to hold me without any creaks or wobbling (Although I can’t say I’d enjoy sleeping there with my legs dangling over the edge at the knees!)

Hopefully it will hold up for a couple years at least. So far, no crayons/markers/pencils/stickers have found their way onto it, but I know it’s only a matter of time!

Nice looking bed! I stumbled across that same plan on that website and plan on building it as my next project.
