This was my first whack at segmented turning. It’s a kitchen tool crock that I made for my mom-in-law. Its made of 12 segment maple rings with a floating walnut base. The accent lines at the top were burned in with a piece of 12ga wire and the writing was done with a Dremel, filled in with black acrylic paint. The writing is a version of the Rae Dunn “big letter” style that my wife and mom-in-law love. It’s finished in BLO, waxed and buffed.

I know it’s a very simple piece but I have a nasty habit of not using expectation management when trying new techniques and becoming discouraged when it doesn’t come out looking like a masterpiece. I made this using a home made wedgie sled and I must say, I am impressed with the accuracy it enabled. Because of the depth of the piece and my lack of tools long enough to reach that deep, I had to turn it in two pieces; which was a learning experience in its own right.

The whole thing is 8.5 in tall, 6.5 in wide. Thanks for looking.

This is a wonderful place to store kitchen utensils. It’s a beautiful crock and the wood segmentation forms a nice pattern. Congratulations!
