This table (metal base) originally had a wood top with a glass center insert. The glass was broken so my wife asked that I just make a new top so we could reuse the table on the screened porch. I used poplar because that’s all I had on had on hand at the time but she wanted it stained dark. I knew this would be challenging but this gave me a change to use the Charles Neils wood conditioner for the first time. I’m suprised how well this turned out given how prone poplar is to blotching. I used the recommended two coats of wood conditioner and then used the General finishes Java gel stain followed by several coats of poly. I’m happy with the results and you would never know that’s poplar. Sorry, I forgot to get some pics once I mounted the finished top back on the base.

That is impressive! I seriously had it stuck in my mind to just not even try staining poplar. I really appreciate you posting this as it has me realizing it is possible. You are definitely right, I never would have guessed that was poplar!

Nice work, looks great and a good save on the table as a whole.
