Our local Woman’s Club asked me to design and build 2 mini lending libraries for our small town. I found a pattern on the Internet I liked, and modified it in Sketchup.

Each library consumed about 90% of a full sheet of 3/4” exterior plywood, so they are heavy when you get done! All of the trim wood is cedar. The door window is acrylic plastic. I planed 5/8” thick cedar dog eared pickets down to 1/2” thickness, then put 2 layers of them on the roof.

The lady who asked for them approved my Sketchup drawing, so I started building the 1st unit. Then she said, can you have lettering on it, in memory of a past Woman’s Club president?? I told her I was not sure how small I could hand letter with a pointed artist’s brush, but I would try. The letters are only about 1.25 inches tall. I printed the letters from Sketchup, then used carbon paper to outline them….....then hand painted the letters with a small artist’s brush.

Then she says, by the way, the lady you are doing in memory of….......her favorite color was pink….....can you get some pink in there somewhere??? My best idea was to paint a pink star, using blue masking tape to outline the star.

I posted this project on our city facebook page, and I was surprised how much the ladies in town like the idea of the mini lending library, and my design :)

You can read about my Trials & Tribulations on my woodworking web site.. The link to my Sketchup design is also on my web site.

I had never heard of these things, until the lady asked me to build one. Apparently they have been around for a long time. There are tons of different designs on the Internet. But being a woodworker, I know straight stuff is a whole lot easier than round stuff… that is why I picked this boxy design versus an airplane, or dinosaur :)
