A while back I was looking through some past editions of Woodsmith magazine and came across this table design in issue 204. It looked like something that would look good in our family room and my wife enthusiastically agreed. Where Woodsmith used mahogany, maple and wenge for their table I decided to use QSWO instead of the mahogany to match our other pieces. The hardest part of making this table was the amount and length of the through tenons. There are eight 1/2” tenons that go through the 3” wide legs. Doing this by hand looked daunting to me and as I was showing my wife she asked me if I didn’t have a machine to do them with. With her encouragement I researched mortise machines and settled on the Powermatic 701. Wow what a nice machine. All together there are 28 mortise and tenon joints and having the 701 made quick work of them. For the top I wanted some QSWO that was highly figured so I contacted Zack at Dunham Hardwood in Iowa to pick me some matching boards. As you can see he did a nice job. I ammonia fumed the pieces for 4 to 5 hours and then wash coated them with some garnet shellac to seal the pieces. After 3 coats of Waterlox I assembled the table. The Wenge accent pieces set off nicely along with the figured maple. For me a challenging piece for sure but in the end well worth the effort.

Absolutely stunning! The fuming looks great, did you put effort into selecting boards for color? I know the frustration of having to balance the time in the fuming booth when the wood doesn’t react equally.

I must say I’m impressed. I’m neither a fan of oak or overly ornate G&G furniture but you’ve come up with an outstanding piece. The design is elegant without the pretentious fussiness of some of the G&G inspired pieces I’ve seen. Beautiful lines and proportions and of course, great craftsmanship and finishing. A true heirloom piece.

Except for the top, all of the white oak if from the same tree and matches color-wise. Thanks for all the nice comments.

Nicely done! Almost feels like there is some Frank Loyd Wright influence in there along with Greene & Greene.

Great display of craftsmanship here. The table came out great, I really like it in white oak.

That is certainly one beautiful piece! I don’t think people realize how much effort and craftsmanship G&G details require. You really hit a home run with this.
