Visiting a friend who owns an acreage in MO, he handed me a slab of wood and asked “What do you see?”
“An Owl!” I responded. The face was rough being cut with a change saw. I told him I could run it through my planer and sand it down. He gave me two slabs, “Here one for me & one for you.” After planing, I sliced this piece off and sanded both pieces smooth. Then I had the idea of mounting one on the lid of a box I wanted to make for him. The box is out of Ash with walnut trim and lid. I created a false bottom covered with felt leaving about an inch of space beneath. I used a Birchwood Casey product called Tru-Oil for a finish, then waxed the box. He was thrilled when I gave it to him. I have a another project in mind using the slab he gave me. I’m learning that nature is the true artist, even with wood faces. Thanks for looking!

That’s amazing how much that slab looks like an owl. I just recently repaid someone that gave me some wood with a gift made from the wood he gave me.

Nice looking slabs of wood, and nature did a good job of creating the owl look. Good job on the box

Nice shape and design of that box! I like that live piece of wood shape detail on top.
