OK everybody I finally decided to go for it and try something. I really don’t know what kind of wood I used, I had in a box that my uncle gave me with tools and stuff. Cut it, glued it together and turn it. My wife really liked it and she said she was glad to see something nice after spending so much money on tools…. sounds familiar to some of you? to finish it I just sand it up to 400 got it shining, cleaned and used what my uncle gave me… not sure what it is but he uses it to recondition his chopper blocks and butcher block. he also uses it for his desk and his pens. I have to say thanks to LJ i found a hobby and inspiration…. I’m very happy with the results and… ‘HI EVERYBODY, MY NAME IS JOSH AND I’M ADDICTED TO TURNING’ ... way more projects to come!!

follow up: called my uncle and the woods are pine/cherry/dark maple. the wax is beewax with BLO.
