Various Picture Frames

I’ve been largely on picture frame duty ever since it warmed up enough to get back into the shop this spring. We had a pair of hand-drawn caricatures from my brother’s wedding last year (party favors for all the guests by an acquaintance of the bride), and we had three nice prints that my elder daughter (all of 7) has managed to acquire from various sources and needed better framing than hanging from clothespins. A lot of large frames to make, but to keep it interesting I used a different profile every time…

Major innovations in this batch of frames was employing a spline-cutting jig both for strength and (more) to line up the pieces for glue up. Also dipped into matting for the first time—the black mattes on the caricatures came with the art, but I did the matting for the others myself.

Caricature frames are cherry, the dancer and the sunset are heartwood pine from reclaimed floorboards, and the dragon is just from a slab of 2×8 treated lumber that I had lying around and was approximately the right length. All finished with clear satin spray-on lacquer.
