I made this small cheese board for my step mom’s birthday not too long ago and thought I would share it. It is made from a board cut out of a spalted log I brought back from a camping trip a few years back. I am not sure of the exact species, but I think it looks rather nice. Hopefully you enjoy seeing it!

I’ve been told any of the boards with some sugar content (a lot of them it seems) can spalt.

Splat is about the conditions being right. Usually the side of the log that is down, or close to the ground, get no/little sun to dry it, poor airflow to dry it, moisture, and the tree starts to rot. Temperature has a just right amount, too cold turns it off, and too hot retards it too. It requires a bit of fungi, the floor of the woods has that.

Perfect spalt is when you catch it just right, and the pores have started to change color, but the wood is still sound, not really rotten. Gone past that it is known to be “punky” if too punky it may be more goo than wood.

You can do spalting lumber at home, inside or out.

Indoors for smaller pieces, and amounts.

Outdoors you can make a spalt farm, size and amount just dictated by your space.

Plenty on it online, if you want to chase it down.

For your pic I have really only dealt with Maple as a spalted wood, it is one known to do so easily, high sugar if you think about syrup. Spalted Maple resembles your pic quite a bit. But like I said earlier, and wood with a sugar count can/will spalt as it decays.

Beautiful piece of wood there. Thanks for posting.

Nice cheese board and the spalted wood has a beautiful grain and color to it.
