The story I saw an add in local newspaper for wood in a barn since early 80,s. Had to go look. Was so dark in there could hardly see it. Guy said it was maybe walnut or butternut. Bought several pieces anyway. I had not seen butternut or white walnut as I was told. Looked on line and saw pics of walnuts and some nuts that looked like walnuts except longer and more oval shaped. Butternuts. OK so this wood is not as hard as walnut but does have nice grain patterns. I made this nice 11” X 7” X 4” jewelry, music or what not box. Wife suggested light blue felt for the linning.
Wanted something a little different so cut the top with 7 degree slants on all four sides.
Made the walnut legs stand off about 1/2” from the body with brass rods and the lid handle a little less.
The lid hinge is made from a 1/2” dowel compliments of LJ Jerry. Thanks Jerry. I did use miter keys made of walnut to reinforce the miter cut sides. The box sets up about 1/2”suspended on its legs. Made a set of ring bars to fit into the lift out tray that holds the movement. The music movement is a cheapo but plays for a fairly long time on each wind. This was fun build but took me longer than expected. Thanks for looking.

Very very nice, beautiful and original design! I love the way you did the outrigger legs, that’s really a first for me.

At first looking at this box I thought the legs would pull out and reveal a secret compartment. Then I read about it and see it is your design. You had me fooled for a minute Vernon. It’s a beautiful box. I’m beginning to get hooked on the mirrors I see inside these lately. That may have to be on my next box. The butternut looks great.

I like the expanded take on the legs and lid pull. The butternut and walnut work great together as well. It’s great to see more variations on the basic square box. Nicely done.

Very nicely done, Vernon. Those dovetail miter keys look kinda familiar. ;-) Glad you found them useful.
