Oseberg Bear Tine

This is one of my new Tines that I made using some Quilted Big Leaf Maple I got from Oregon. It is very beautiful wood, but quite expensive. So it took a leap of faith to attempt to bend it. It does bend, but on my first attempt, I had some d-laminating with some of the heavy figure. After that, I was a bit more careful, and took it slower. The side and top details are carved from Maple burl.

The side details was inspired by the prow of the Oseberg Viking Longboat that sits in a museum in Oslo, Norway. The bear on the top is somewhat styled after the Zuni Indian bear fetish that is popular in the southwest. The top is held on with hidden pins on each side.

It is about 16” long, by 6” wide, by 7” high. Finished with a hand rubbed tung oil and urethane.

I have this for sale on my new website

Wow! No wonder they chose this as a Top Three.

Very original, outstanding handling of the details, and choice of wood. The bear fetish is great.
