Project Information

Here's the latest stock I've been working on. It's made from Mesquite with a tiger maple center. The mesquite had so many cracks and voids I had a hard time laying out the blank for carving. Here's what it looked like when I started.

The voids and cracks were filled with the same black epoxy I use for bedding. I like the way the cracks turned out! This stock has been sanded to 120 grit and after it's sanded to 400 or better and the pores are filled, this wood is going to look fantastic! I've been gone for almost a week, so I'll have to carve this weekend to get some work done.

I see this wood escaped becoming a bench! :) I appreciate the detailed photos- I have no experience of looking at the inside of a gun stock. Very interesting for me t see in there. So- now- if you were to sell a gunstock- and I know that you do- does the customer provide the rest of the gun parts- barrell etc. etc.?

LOL, it's usually the other way around. Everything is a gunstock, unless it's all sapwood, full of holes, crack, etc. or the wrong species. Then it's a bench, table, bed, chair, etc. Can you imagine doing the delicate internal carving with a 2 1/2 hp router? I sell mostly unfinished gunstocks, the customer fits their hardware and finishes the stock. At the point I ship them they are sanded till the major router marks are out and the barreled action almost fits. About 90% of the work is done, however the 10% that is left takes 90% of the total time to build a finished product and the customer can be proud of the stock they built.

Here's the most beautiful rifle in the world.

The factory hard plastic stock is so ugly that everybody who buys one needs one of my aftermarket stocks!
