This country-style kitchen cupboard and hutch was roughly based on Fine Woodworking’s Country Hutch from issue #189. The frame for the base was made from reclaimed 2×6 white oak barn wood. The panels, doors, and drawer fronts are all quarter sawn white oak. The drawer bodies are made from poplar.

The base construction was all frame-and-panel where the legs also hold the panels. The bottom and back of the base are all raised panels. The top is traditional carcase construction with a face frame. Doors are made shaker-style using Dominoes and raised panels. The back for the upper case is a frame of shop-made ship-lapped paneling.

For finish, I used Watco Danish Oil in Dark Walnut, then super blonde shellac, and finished with several coats of wipe-on polyurethane in satin finish. The door hinges are Amerock oiled bronze setup for inset doors. The drawer glides are Blum Blumotion.

Our house has lots of antiques, including the kitchen table and chairs. We wanted something to fit in with the existing furniture and decor. The project took roughly 3 months with working on it most nights and weekends. It has the first handcut dovetail drawers I’ve ever done and the first raised panels. There is a total of 10 raised panels in the project.

I’ll be the first (of many people I think) to say: Outstanding project. Really like the design. And you did a great job on the joinery it looks like. Great work!

Every house should have a step back. Love the style, and who doesn’t feel warmer and fuzzier around some warm looking Oak. Instant Heirloom piece here, nice work, thanks for sharing.

You choose some awesome old boards for that project – make it even more beautiful. I like those straight clean lines- bravo, good job indeed!

Thanks everyone!

My wife put some finishing touches on last night. These are all various kitchen accessories that we’ve inherited from our families. It really pulls it together and gives that antique look I was going for.

Well done my friend. I’ve tinkered with all sorts of A&C finishes. but that’s become my go-to as well.
