I had some leftover maple and maple ply, and so I decided to build a new desk for the “study.” For the legs I wanted to use material on hand and so I laminated two 2×4s then milled them down to be even. I’m really happy the way that the construction-grade lumber turned out for the legs. The design is rather simple and not much different than a table, but it’s my first desk/table and I’m pretty pleased how it ended up.

Photo index:
1. The whole desk
2. Detail of the top
3. Detail of the rabbet joint
4. The under-workings of the desk
5. Detail of the bevel on the edges of the top.
6. The desk in situ.

@dakremer I told myself the pine legs were just going to be temporary, but I do like them. I still might upgrade the legs down the road, but I have more pressing projects for now. It’s hard to tell from the photograph, but I chose the best quality 2×4s I had around with mostly straight grain and few knots.

For the color I applied two coats of Minwax Sedona Red stain and then a couple of coats of poly.

That’s a fine desk. I like that you don’t have aprons. Should be easy on the legs when sitting in the chair. Nothing like wide open spaces to work on. Excellent job.

Great looking table/desk! Those legs look great for construction grade lumber! Good work!
