This piece of Arbutus came from British Columbia’s west coast Gulf Islands. Also the wood is known as Pacific Madrone. It is Canada’s only native broad-leafed evergreen tree. It likes dry conditions and resides not further than 8 km from the pounding waves of the Pacific ocean. This is one reason why you LJers should consider visiting Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands to see these glorious trees. It is a wood workers paradise.

A friend brought me several pieces of this wood and it has been sitting in my wood stash for the last five years. The dry climate of southern Alberta has depleted any moisture in the wood and severe checking and twisting was the result. Last year I cut out a boot blank and exposed all the splits and worm holes.

Finally getting my courage up I commenced the process of removing wood and shaping my boot. Luckily I was able to keep the blank together during the carving process. The wood carves beautifully and I am pleased to introduce “Breezy” to you. I also thank the bugs that helped remove some of the wood. Must give credit where it is due!

Enjoy the boot and thanks for your comments. I love reading them.

Regards,
Roman, the BOOTMAN!

Nice boot. loggers usually wear high top boots so they don’t go home with a boot full of sawdust. I have always wanted to get some of that wood and try turning it. Your boot shows me what it looks like.
