I recently picked up a copy of an old Wood Magazine book titled Making Great Boxes and this one called out to me to make it. I actually made 2 and this is the second one as I saw some changes that I wanted to add. The material is Black Walnut ans Spalted Magnolia. The size is 15 1/2”W x 8 1/2”D x 5 1/2”H. Thanks for looking and commenting. It’s always appreciated.

I made this one a full inch taller than the plans call for.

The extra inch allows for more room in the bottom.

The tray is a little shallow, but there is limited room to fit it in and out based on the swing of the lid.

Making the box taller comes at the cost of not being able to take full advantage of the beveled cuts on the table saw.

Real nice work on that one and a great choice of wood combination. Well done!

Thanks for the nice compliment. I understand that bathtub shelves are popular. I may have to give some thought to building one of those some day.

Thanks for the nice compliment. I had exhausted my supply of spalted magnolia and it is hard to come by. However, a friend of mine just cut into a log he had stored in the back of his place and I managed to score a little, so I am looking for the right boxes to use it in. I may try my hand at a Tambour box like yours some day.

Really nice, clean work with superb wood selection. I’m a big fan of spalted panels.

Do you suppose if you chamfered the bottom of the box that it might make it a little less bulky? No offense meant.

Thanks for looking and commenting. I see that you like to use a lot of burl. I wish that I had a ready access to some. No offense taken. Everybody has a different preference. I pretty much followed the pattern in the book, which is unusual for me as I like to design my own for most things that I build. The box is not as bulky as you might think. It proportions out very nicely. I did make this one an inch taller than the plan as the first one I built was to shallow inside for my liking. This is the first one made according to the plan and may be more to your liking.

I thought that it wasn’t deep enough for my liking.
