I have recently made several of these relief wood spirits taken from a Steve Good pattern. This last one was made from a piece of very old 1” thick rough sawn red oak. The mustache and eyebrows were too much empty space so I filled them with steel wool and lacquered them heavy to slow down the rust. The pattern is cut out at approximately a 4 degree bevel on the scroll saw which allows it to protrude from the base by 1/2”. The 2nd pic shows the raised relief effect.I stained the back part with golden oak and used natural Danish Oil for the cartoon. The runes in the bottom right corner were fashioned from a Tolkien rune generator that I found online and they are my name in Elvish. I mounted this one on the outside of my shop with countersunk screws and plug filled them.

Okay that makes me feel better that it’s not just me seeing it. My first thought was “that looks a lot like Gandalf”. :) Good lookin’ work! Thanks for sharing!
