I rolled together my two tool boxes to make a basic platform for this new setup. I also started to create a dust collection system and decided to put it in the corner of the shop. I had a spare computer D chord and some leftover romex. I found a light switch and 110 outlet and wired up a toggle switch for the vacuum. I mounted both to the bench in a nice location. I did go purchase some 2” schedule 40 PVC and started to run a new dust collection system in my shop. I hope to finish that project this weekend and get my shop clean again.

I had a bunch of scrap wood, pallet boards, partial board, mdf and hardboard left over from other projects. I also had a really bad particle board entertainment center from my son’s room; we upgraded his furniture this winter. I decided that I wanted to put together a miter bench with dust hood. I ripped a combination of hard board, mdf and shelves from that entertainment center into wings for the saw. I took some scrap 2×4 and cut some supports. I made some cubby holes that I will later use for storage of small screws or something. I ripped some additional 2×4s down to ~1”x 1” for the dust shield and use a piece of scrap 1/8” ply to start sheeting it out. Ran out of ply, so I will have to go buy a new piece this weekend.

I found some rockler rail I was storing at the bottom of one of my draws. I had pieces of various sizes and decided to use them to make a stop block. I mitered the fence and place the rails in various locations. Did not have enough, but I will wait till my next project to finish this off.

It is southern ugly, but I spend probably $30 additional dollars this weekend on PVC and used up all the scrap wood in my shop. Main thing is that system is square and straight. I tested a number of cuts and they all came out to be 90 degrees.

LoL…southern ugly….kinda like that term! Looks good and seems practical! Thanks for sharing!

“Southern Ugly” it does not look very good but works perfectly as intended and is built with stuff laying around the house. I cannot tell you how many southern ugly things my grandfather made because he did not throw anything away and re-purposed everything.

Have your say...
