Angled Coffee Table

This is a coffee table that I made for my daughter to replace an old piece of crap she bought a few years ago from Walmart or somewhere.

It is made from solid Jatoba. What a hard wood that is! Very hard on my table saw and planer. When I bought the lumber I was sorting through the stack and found a 12’ board that had a strange color to it. The guy at the yard said to grab it if I wanted. I had already planned on what I needed plus an extra board so I grabbed that one too. That odd color is what you seen in the “stripes” on the table top. I was originally thinking that it was purpleheart but as I planed it and sanded it never lost that color so I’m just thinking that it is Jatoba also, just an odd color. It’s a beautiful purple color. My daughter really likes purple so she asked me to add it in somehow so there it is.

She has some other furniture with some weird angles so I thought about this design. Not really sure that I like it but she does so that’s all good. The leg frames and supports separate so it’s easily transportable. That was done with brass inserts and furniture bolts through the legs. The legs are cut at 15 degrees and joined with bridle joints that are glued and pegged. They aren’t going anywhere! I think that was too steep. 12 degrees would have probably looked a bit better now that I’m done with it. The top is 22” x 36” and is about 17 3/4” high. This matches her current table that she says is the perfect size for her small couch and apartment.

It was finished with 4 coats of Arm-R-Seal semi gloss. My first use of this product. I really like it but did have a hard time with the table top in keeping a wet edge when wiping in on. It would start to set before I got to the opposite edge. I think the dog likes the smell of it!

Looks good Scott. I’m sure she will like it and asking you to make more furniture for her. Looks like Charles forgot to say something!

Thanks Tony and Charles. Tony, he did put something. Not sure why it’s not showing up here but it came through in the email notice.
