TRUTH ALERT: I saw this on Pinterest and thought it would be a fairly easy one to pull off. After cutting the initial shape, I used my belt sander upside down to round the outside edge. It was not as easy as I thought because as I rotated toward the center, knuckles hit sanding belt and skin and the work piece would fly across the shop. After about the second blank I decided that was not the way to go…finally got it rounded with consistent measurement.

I do some work with encaustic painting (wax) and learned a technique called “shellac burn”. The name is fairly self-explanatory. I incorporated this technique substituting rub on poly, concentrating on a serious burn to the inner circle. That seemed to add some depth to a “simple” piece. This was probably not the smartest decision, but seemed right at the time. I don’t think my wife knows about shellac burn technique. All she would here was “burn” and I would be on her “watch” list. However, she does love the necklace. None of my work is legally protected, so feel free to copy.
