What do you do when a mutual agreement to NOT buy anniversary gifts is in place? You make her something. Total one-up job here!

I have never turned a lid for a bowl before. So I decided now is as good a time as any.

The bottom is Cherry. The lid is Honduras Mahogany. The handle is Cherry. I finished the whole thing with Mylands Friction Finish.

Mylands….sometimes, I think that stuff is easy to use, other times….pisses me off. The lid was one of those times. I applied, sanded, applied, sanded, applied, steel wool, and then finally applied and got the result I wanted. I did try a different way to apply and that seemed to give better results.
NOTE: I am familiar with finishing with super-glue and go that route for handles and other projects with regular use. I went with Mylands this time as other bowls we have made and finished with Mylands still look beautiful years later.

I’ll have to look into turning lids. I’m confident my methodology was low-res. But it came out well enough.

Thanks for looking and feel free to pick apart or call out opinions. I’m a big boy, a designer by trade, and believe honest feedback allows growth. For instance, I feel the lid may be a bit “heavy”. A smaller diameter may have helped this.

nice job & a lovely gift for someone special to you.
Your problems with the finish, did you seal the timber before polishing? with a piece like this I would normally do a couple of coats of wipe on 1/3 poly, 1/3 BLO, & 1/3 mineral turps, when it dries rub it with some 0000 wire wool them add your favorite finish.
Hope this helps with the next one

Nice clean uncluttered design, great workmanship also.
