After a few years being married the wife’s and my old college bookcases started to over flow, and I figured this was as good a time as any to make a nice book shelf. The overall dimensions are 57” X 40” X 12”

I purchased a ¾” and ¼” sheet of birch plywood (against my better judgment it was from China) and Utile for the top and face frame. The case and shelves were made from the ¾” plywood using dados and rabbits, with the ¼” plywood set in a rabbit as the back panel. I made the top from two 6” boards glued together using an old doweling jig to line them up. That was a focused job as I knew the doweling jig does not line up dead center as it is advertised to. Anyone know if this is fixable? The face frame parts were cut, milled, and joined together with pocket holes and then glued down to the case only with a few pocket hole screws on the top and bottom where they can’t be seen. Finally, I finished the bookcase with 6 coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal satin finish for a silky-smooth feel.

I designed the bookcase in google SketchUp to custom fit are larges and smallest books, which make the build go a lot smoother for me. It took a bit longer than I had hoped as we moved in the middle of the build out of an apartment into a rental house with a garage (I mean shop!) that somehow consumed two months with no building to be seen…

The only down side to this project was using the Chines plywood. The veneers were very thin so I couldn’t sand them very much and only by hand at that. Worst of all, when transporting it from my parents shop to our house (one and a half hour drive) the veneer on the back bubbled up in a 7” oval shape. Luckily that will not be seen.

Over all I am very pleased with the outcome and more importantly the Wife loves it! Its already full and book case number two is in the planning stages.

Thank you for stopping by! Until next time, take care.
